Cream Drinks Lesson: Making a Grasshopper

The bartending course lessons use demonstration videos, memorization tips and step-by-step sequences to help you understand and practice creating drinks.

Below is a reduced-size example:

Drink Memorization Tip: Grasshoppers are green. Use this drink's name to help remember green creme de menthe, the main ingredient!

GrasshopperGrasshopperGRASSHOPPER
1/2 oz. Green Creme de Menthe
1/2 oz. White Cream de Cacao
2 oz. Cream (half n half)

You will use food coloring to simulate different colored alcohol, and milk (or a white substitute) to simulate half and half used in cream drinks.

Suggested Supplies

Step 1STEP 1:
  • Chill the stem glass and fill the mixing glass half full with ice.
  • Pour 1/2 oz. creme de menthe in jigger and add to mixing glass.
  • Pour 1/2 oz. creme de cacao in jigger and add to mixing glass.

Step 2STEP 2:
  • Pour 1 oz. cream in the jigger and add to the mixing glass. Repeat for the second ounce of cream.
Or pour the first ounce using the jigger, then free-pour in the second ounce at the same time.

Step 3STEP 3:
  • Place the stainless steel cover securely over the mixing glass and shake.
The mixing cover is designed to form a tight fit.
With the steel cover facing down (as shown in the photo inset), tap the glass mixing cup free and place it aside.

Step 4STEP 4:
  • Place the strainer securely inside the rim of the shaker and strain mixture into glass.
Quickly discard the ice that was chilling the stem glass. Keep one finger over the strainer as you pour the mixture into the stem glass and serve on a napkin! You can optionally garnish with a mint on a napkin.

CONGRATULATIONS!  You just completed the Grasshopper and are well on your way! If you had problems, go back and repeat the steps or review the video to watch the steps.
